Introduction to the Joint Rock Committee
The Joint Rock Garden Plant Committee (or 'Joint Rock' as it is known) is a committee formed of members of the RHS, AGS and SRGC. They meet regularly at shows round the country and consider plants for various awards. Awards given to plants are intended to draw attention to plants with good potential for exhibition. Awards given to plants are:
Preliminary Commendation (PC) to a new plant of promise for exhibition.
Award of Merit (AM) to plants that are of great merit for exhibition.
First Class Certificate (FCC) to plants of outstanding excellence for exhibition.
Botanical Certificate (BC) to plants of exceptional botanical interest (but not necessarily potential exhibition plants)
These are all awards for the plant. In addition, an exhibitor may be given an award for skill in growing a plant:
Cultural Commendation (CC) to growers whose exhibits show evidence of great cultural skill.
The AM above should not be confused with the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) which is awarded to plants that have been assessed (usually by carrying out a trial) for their garden worthiness. AGMs to Alpines and Rock Plants are also ratified by Joint Rock.
Some of the awards that have been made by the committee at meetings around the country can be seen by following the links below.
