Last batch of orchids from the glasshouse

Cymbidium lowianum

Last plant from the glasshouse. I'm not sure what this is, maybe a begonia ?

By now it was gone 11, and I had pretty much shot my bolt in the glasshouse. If I was going to take any decent pictures of orchids, they were already in the camera, so I wandered outside, slowly making my way back to the entrance, via the rock garden, the alpine house etc. The camera bag was too heavy to permit a long excursion into the further flung parts of the garden, but at least there was a magnolia between the glasshouse and the rock garden.

About six years ago, I took some really memorable images of Fritillaria meleagris on the banks of this pool, standing out against the water. Now the pool is silted up and overgrown. Some of this is water level, but not all.

The meadow from the bottom of the rockery, where there was a lovely white iris growing out in the open garden (I'm not sure what it was, there are people much better qualified than me to identify it).

Walking up the paths through the rock garden...

Sanguinaria canadensis

At the top of the rock garden, just below the landscape house, there is a terrace with seats looking out over the garden. At the back of this there is a shaded bed at the foot of a rock wall, full of special woodlanders, including calanthes at the right time of year. At the end of March I seemed to have arrived on the one day when the Sanguinaria canadensis (single) was absolutely perfect. The highlight of the day for me.
