WESTERN CAPE 2018
DATES: 30 August - 13 September 2018
LEADER: Callan Cohen
ACCOMMODATION: Guest houses, bed & breakfasts, lodges
The small Cape Floral Kingdom is located in the mountains of South Africa's southern-most tip. There is a wealth of diverse plant species to be found here.
You can also explore the adjacent Succulent Karoo - the richest area for succulents in the world.
The clay soil border between the Cape Floral Kingdom and Karoo, holds the greatest concentration of bulbous species in the world.
Our visit will be in the spring, the peak time for flowering.
- Cape Peninsula: We'll start our tour with an exploration of the peninsula's mountainous spine - a length of 70km. Discover the unique 'fynbos' vegetation that grows in the Table Mountain National Park.
- Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden: Explore plants from all over South Africa in this world-famous botanical garden.
- West Coast Beaches: Just north of Cape Town, you'll discover a vastly different flora on the sandy shores of the West Coast. From delightful daisy displays to endemic-rich granites in the West Coast National Park, there's plenty to see here.
- Namaqualand (southern edge): Here, the Cape Mountains give way to the valleys and plains of arid Karoo. During spring, pink flowers blossom on the small succulent bushes that dominate the landscape - an ideal photo opportunity!
