US Seed Import Information

Information for US Members

To order seed from the list, US members must apply for an Import Permit and send this in with their order.  Permits are free and will be valid for 3 years.  If you have had a permit in previous years, please check the expiry date of your permit is at least up to the end of March 2022 to allow time for us to pick your order, complete the paperwork and for your posted order to then clear USDA customs.  Information about permits and information about how to apply for a permit online.can be found here:  USDA e-permits

and please refer to the detailed instructions here:  Importing Small Lots of Seed

In Section 2, under Scientific Names of plants, please do not list exact plant names, but instead write “eligible taxa”. and in Section 3, under “Intended use”, tick “Small lots of Seed”

To order seeds from the AGS seed exchange, please send to me:

  • your seed order online, or by mail using the printed form in the booklet
  • a photocopy of your import permit (all three pages) for every 50 packets that you order
  • a green and yellow label for every 50 packets that you order

Please post your permit and green/yellow labels directly to:
Diane Clement,
AGS Centre, Avon Bank, Pershore, Worcestershire, UK, WR10 3JP

The Seed Distribution team will place inside the package:

  • your seeds
  • a list of your seed order to meet the permit requirements
  • the copy of your permit
  • a printed label with your name and address.

The AGS Seed Distribution team will paste the green and yellow label on the outside of the package to direct it to the Inspection Station.  At the Inspection Station, your seeds will be checked and then resealed, and the mailing label with your address will be pasted on the outside of the shipment.  The whole thing will be returned to the US mail system, and then forwarded to you.

Please can US members use our on-line ordering system if possible, as this greatly helps our administration process.   When you complete your order, you will be required to insert your permit number as printed on your green and yellow label and then mail your permit(s) and green and yellow label(s) to us.  For your ease of ordering, the on-line system will not allow you to select seed banned by the USDA permit requirements.
