The Lyttel Trophy

The Society's Premier Award
The Lyttel Trophy was awarded to the Society by the Rev Professor E S Lyttel, a past President of the Society (at the time the President was Lady Lawrence).  It was first awarded in 1940 to G P Baker and the presentation was made at a private luncheon given by Professor Lyttel at the Criterion Restaurant in London.  Professor Lyttel did not become President of the Society until 1944 and he was the shortest serving President in the society’s history.  He sadly died three months after his appointment.

Before he died it was agreed at a meeting he attended that the recipient of the Cup should be selected by a panel consisting of past holders of the Merit Cup, together with the President and Secretary, ex-officio.

He stipulated that the Cup be awarded annually to someone who had done good work of some kind in connection with alpines.  It was not to be for a competitive display of alpines, for which cups, medals and prizes already existed, but was to be awarded on the broad ground of meritorious work:

“and such work may be of various kinds.  It may be awarded to someone who regularly exhibits at AGS shows, or to someone who occasionally exhibits alpines of merit.  It may be awarded to someone who does not exhibit, but is prominently successful with difficult alpines, or to someone who has enriched the alpine world by collection of new and rare alpines of merit.  It may be awarded to someone whose studies and writing have notably increased our knowledge of alpines, or to someone who neither exhibits, nor collects, nor writes about alpines, but has done outstanding work in spreading interest in alpines”.

Some years ago an anonymous donor very kindly made sufficient funds available to enable a number of miniature replicas of the Lyttel Trophy to be produced.  Each recipient is presented with a miniature that is theirs to keep for their lifetime.
