HOLEHIRD GARDEN (Lakeland Horticultural Society), Patterdale Road, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1NP. Open every day, dawn to dusk. Admission free, but donations welcome. Maintained by volunteer members of the LHS. 10 acres of gardens on a fell side site with natural rock gardens on Coniston grit outcrops. Two alpine houses open to the public, one a display house erected in 2000 and one a Victorian house with tufa wall. Established and new scree beds, stone troughs and raised beds. Walled garden with mixed shrub and plant borders. Heather gardens and ericaceous beds. National collections of Astilbe, Meconopsis, and Polystichum ferns.
