Draba mollissima

I have a handsome cushion of Draba mollissima, about five and a half inches in diameter, in the alpine house. Each winter it turns brown and appears to have given up its lease on life. But each spring, and again this year, it reverts back to a brilliant green cushion, and flowers brilliantly. In the beginning, before I caught on to this pattern of behaviour, I was tempted to consign it to the compost heap but somehow kept it. Good job I did. However, this gem of a plant still makes my heart miss a beat when I see it turning brown?as several other Draba species, growing alongside, hold their colour throughout the winter. What is the explanation?
