Can you flower this plant in the UK and if so how?Go to latest contribution by Margaret Young, 24 November 2006, 16:42. Go to bottom of this page.
I have a plant of Maihuenia poeppigii in my alpine house which I grew from seed collected by a Denver B.G. seed collecting trip in the late 90s. It is now quite large (and v. spiny!) but has never shown any sign of producing what sound like lovely, satiny yellow flowers. Has anyone in the UK (or elsewhere with similar climates) done better. If you have I would love to hear hwo you managed it and also see a photo.
We have grown this plant in Aberdeen but, as for John's plant, ours only got bigger and, in my opinion, unreasonably spiny. There was never any sign of flowers, though once or twice we were enthused by what we thought might be incipent bud formation... no such luck. In the end,we lost patience and the poor thing was relegated to a chilly spot just outside the alpine house, where, against all expectaion, it survives...JUST..but looks worse with each passing year. It certainly proved hardier than we imagined ! I don't think it is too much to expect the occasional flower, though, so I'm sure we ae not the only ones to give up on the is Maihuenia.
