John, I noted your assessment of what is happening climate-wise in Northumberland as it mirrors pretty exactly the situation here in our very different North Wales coastal environment, We too are getting later, cooler springs followed by later, warmer summers. In addition we seem to get a lot more summer gales than we used to an d very good rainfall data kept by a neighbour for the last 40 years show that average annual rainfall has increased from approx 900 mm in the 1970s to 1150 mm now, most of the extra coming in late autumn and February/March.
